The Gallery

These scrolling sketches represent the last seven drawings I've done of the Jokka. Some of these might end up in the Permanent Exhibit; most of them are just sketches, idle thoughts in search of stories. Check here frequently.

Conflicted -- [Sketch / Version: 1]
Thenet and Dlane (you should see how long I worked on this pose... over... and over... ). I imagine it's from Part-2-ish of the book, given the background.

The Jeweler's Apprentice -- [Sketch / Version: 1]
We haven't seen Jokka for a while! Ta˜el and Anaia, who is stringing up beads. Yes, that series of lines back there is a person. Or will be!

Urban Planning -- [Sketch / Version: 1]
Thenet reappears in this drawing discussing the site of a future settlement with a friendly male... who is rather striking-looking, isn't he? And young too, I think. A little gangly yet.

Mortar and Pestle -- [Sketch / Version: 1]
A male Jokkad grinding herbs. I had no idea how I wanted to pose this or what he was doing, and this idea was the nicest of all the ones I erased, so... he looks well off.

Dlane Smug Again -- [Sketch / Version: 1]
Dlane showed up again while I was working through the publishing schedule, smug about finally being able to meet all these interesting humans she's heard about but never had the chance to visit....

Against All Opposing Forces -- [Gouache / Version: 3]
And it's done! Look, I even remembered its spirals, though most of them are visible from the front of its body.
This was an interesting piece in many ways. I got to use colors I rarely use (green and purple). I got to work with a lot of competing diagonals, both in the colors and in the lines. I got to use both the watercoloryness of the gouache, and its under-advertised ability to make clean, almost ink-like lines. Most of all, though, I realized that this is a repeatable experience. It's hard to explain what an epiphany that is... so I don't think I'll try.
Thenet Reņa-eperu, complicated, beautiful, stern and alive.

Against All Opposing Forces, Underpainting -- [Gouache / Version: 2]
Yet another of the paintings I'm simultaneously working on, I chose this one because Thenet looks stern and I don't do stern very frequently. This is the underpainting, so the colors are washed out. My next layer will start adding the really vibrant parts. Still, I'm pleased that its hair is so many colors; I was trying to show its mane and tail in the spectrum in which it would be seen by other Jokka, far more complex than human eyes would discern.
